Honduras | Con Todo mi Corazon

February 28, 2011

Words escape me right now. The photographs are too moving to me to delve into a lengthy dissertation on how impacting a humanitarian trip like this can be to someone. In the next few months, as things develop, I’ll be sharing more about how you can possibly get involved with the group/charity, Operation Ayuda. Needless to say, I was truly impacted by the beauty of the people and the land. My hat is off to people like Marc and Lori Schreckheise who have devoted their lives to serving the people of Honduras, they’re truly doing an amazingly selfless work. Also, my friend Myles Young who organized this trip and is the visionary behind a lot of things that are still to come. Awesome, inspiring people. Here are some images to enjoy.

I do have to offer a huge “thank you” to my good friend Scott at the Kodak company for donating the film for this trip. Everything you see here in color was captured on the beautiful new Portra 400, this film is just amazing. The black and white photographs are all on Kodak TriX, a film that has just never let me down. Thank you so much for making it all possible. Secondly, thank you so much to Bill and Brian at Richard Photo Lab in Hollywood, CA for their generosity in sponsoring the processing/scanning of my film. I simply would not be able to do what I do and my pictures wouldn’t look like they look if it wasn’t for the best lab in the world. Thank you, thank you! I’m super excited to see what happens next with this group and the continued success in touching lives in Honduras.

Ode to the Beauty of my Life

February 17, 2011

It has been said that “behind every great man, stands a great woman.” Having someone as amazing as Cheryl in my life has made me a firm believer in this statement. There is honestly no way I could have accomplished half as much as I have without the help of such a strong, intelligent, delightful woman standing with me through thick and thin. Are you in the doghouse Scotty? Did you say something wrong? Actually, I do that all the time, but no. Today marks a very special day in our lives. Cheryl and I have been married for 10 years!
We were young, in love and completely blind to the realities of the world. Somehow and some way we convinced her parents to let us marry (maybe I should have been a lawyer) at 20 years of age. We figured at the time that it would be better for us to go through life loving, learning and living together than waiting forever to get married. 10 years later, I still think we made the right decision.
Having someone that you know will stand with you through tough decisions, be there to hear about your craziest ideas and run through life hand in hand has been such a strength to me. I don’t know where I’d be without her, maybe single, boring and not nearly as nicely dressed. Anyhow, I have the most beautiful wife who I hope all of you get to meet some day and I just wanted to take a blogpost to celebrate our 10 years of love and togetherness (don’t worry, we’re headed out for a nice dinner in a few and will be traveling abroad in the spring to celebrate).

Where do I even start when trying to communicate the style and grace that Amy brought to her sophisticated, small, intimate wedding at Anderson Ranch in the wine country of Kenwood, CA? Amy and David reside in Chicago, IL and decided a wine country, destination wedding would be ideal. The setting was simply breathtaking, the details were beautiful and the people made for such a memorable day. I love how Amy stuck to her vision and how concise everything was. The ladies at A Savvy Event (San Francisco and Napa/Sonoma wedding planners) did a wonderful job of bringing everything together and keeping the day running smoothly. I believe this was only the third wedding at Anderson Ranch and I’m excited about the possibility of photographing there again, the setting is just incredible.
I hope everyone can gather some sort of inspiration from the details, the moments and the sheer beauty of this wedding. Also, there is a great write-up on Snippet & Ink that has some insight from Amy on her wedding, check it out.
This week I’m off to a beautiful wedding in Pasadena, CA and then off to Las Vegas, NV for the annual WPPI tradeshow at the MGM Grand. The weather has been gorgeous lately and I’m thinking we’re going to have a lovely spring. If you’re thinking about booking an engagement session (or even an elopement) for this spring the calendar is filling up fast. Enjoy.

I remember talking to Esther on the phone during our first phone call and she asked me, “do you shoot film?” After I picked up the button that popped off of the shirt on my proud chest, we talked about how she came to the realization after looking at all kinds of photographers, that she was in love with the aesthetic of film photographs. I subtly explained some of the differences in film versus digital and how beautiful film truly is. It was a breath of fresh air to hear from a potential client who had looked at probably hundreds of photos and found herself only wanting a film photographer. (By the way, if you’re wondering, I do still shoot limited amounts of digital)
So fast forward to a couple of weeks ago…Esther, Matt and myself wandered around the beautiful, coastal area of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA to make some engagement photographs…on film. I scouted a couple of spots and found a cool old library, a beautiful outdoor shopping area and Lunada Bay (which I will definitely be taking the family back to for a picnic). I love the laid back pace of Rancho Palos Verdes. The weather was fabulous and of course, Esther and Matt were amazing from the start. I’m getting really excited about their upcoming wedding in Pasadena, CA. Here are some photos from our session together. Enjoy.

Oh, and if you’re into Facebook, I finally crawled out from underneath my little rock and made a business page for Scott Andrew Studio. Check it, like it and leave a nice word or two.
